What is a Vacuum Circuit Breaker?

The Vacuum circuit breaker is an electrical switchgear that uses vacuum as an arc extinguishing medium to cut off current.

Working Principle: When a fault occurs, the fixed and movable contacts inside a sealed vacuum interrupter separate. This action will generate an arc composed of ionized metal vapor. However, in an almost completely vacuum environment, no gas can sustain the combustion of an arc. Metal vapor will quickly re condense on the contact surface, almost instantly extinguishing the arc. This process can quickly isolate faults and minimize energy loss to the greatest extent possible.

Key Components: Its core is the Vacuum Interrupter, which houses the contacts. An Arc Shield protects the chamber from metal vapor contamination. An Actuator Mechanism (spring, magnetic, or motor) drives the moving contact via Operating Rods, while an Insulating Housing provides support and dielectric strength.


What is a Switch Disconnector?

A Switch Disconnector is a eletrical component of the medium-voltage switchgear or ring main unit in the modern power system, The main function of this switching device is that, in the closed position, carries the normal load current. In the open position, it provides a reliable isolating distance to ensure safety for personnel working on a circuit.

Functionality: It is designed to make and break normal load currents safely but is not primarily intended to interrupt high fault currents (short circuits). The isolation switch can withstand short-circuit current for a certain limited duration until the upstream protection component clears the fault in the abnormal situations.
