Definition Of Incoming Operating Mechanism?
The incoming mechanism is a critical control component for the Incoming Unit of a Ring Main Unit, where high-voltage power from the external grid or upstream substation enters the RMU. It operates the primary switch to safely connect, isolate, or ground the incoming circuit.
Depending on system requirements, the incoming mechanism controls one of two switch types:
Load Break Switch ("C" Mechanism)
Designed for frequent operation under normal load conditions.
Three-position operation: ON / OFF / EARTH.
Provides visible isolation and safe grounding for maintenance.
Vacuum Circuit Breaker ("V" Mechanism)
High-capacity applications with fault protection.
Interrupts short-circuit currents to prevent RMU and downstream equipment damage.
Performs all functions of a load break switch with enhanced safety.
All incoming mechanisms include:
Spring-charged manual or motor-operated operation.
Clear position indicators (ON, OFF, EARTH).

Operating Instructions – 11KV Electrical Mechanism For Medium Voltage Switchgear
1. Closing Operation
Manual Closing:
Insert the designated operating handle into the top drive shaft.
Rotate clockwise ~90° to compress the spring to its locking point.
The spring releases, driving the main circuit of the load switch to close.
Electric Closing:
Power the mechanism and send a closing signal.
The controller checks the load switch status and interlocks.
If conditions are met, the mechanism motor completes the closing.
Note: Grounding operation is mechanically locked during main circuit closing.
2. Opening Operation
Manual Opening:
Insert the operating handle into the top drive shaft.
Rotate counter-clockwise ~90° to compress the spring to its latch point.
Spring releases energy to open the main circuit of the load switch.
Electric Opening:
Send an opening signal to the controller.
The controller verifies switch status and interlocks.
Mechanism motor completes the opening operation.
Note: In the open position, closing and earthing operations are allowed.
3. Earthing (Grounding) Operation
Closing the Earthing Switch:
Insert the handle into the bottom grounding drive shaft.
Rotate clockwise ~90°; the spring compresses and releases to close the earthing switch.
Interlocks activate, preventing main circuit closing.
Opening the Earthing Switch:
Insert the handle into the same lower shaft.
Rotate counter-clockwise ~90°; spring releases to open the grounding switch.
Interlocks release, allowing normal load switch operation.
