11KV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch for RMU

A earthing switch is a component in the ring main unit, which is a mechanical device used to ensure personal safety during power equipment maintenance ,Contele is one of suppliers for these switches from China,Our KDJD-12 series 11KV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch For RMU is used to effectively eliminate residual charges on the transformer side when replacing the fuse after the fuse of the composite electrical device is blown, ensuring personal safety during the replacement of the fuse.If you are purchasing grounding switches, please contact us promptly.

A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a vital power equipment in ensuring reliable and continuous electricity supply to end-users in modern power distribution networks, The earthing switches are usually mounted in these RMUs of secondary distribution substations.

RMUs have features of compact size and multi-functional, the safety of personnel and equipment during the ring main units need maintenance and when they are in fault conditions is paramount. The 11KV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch For RMU is a specific, yet critical component .Though the structure of earthing switch is simple.but it is the cornerstone of safe operational procedures, which can provide a verifiable and secure connection between the de-energized parts of the electrical circuit and the earth.

What is an Earthing Switch?

An 11KV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch For RMU is a mechanical switch usually integrated into a medium-voltage component of switchgear assembly, such as an RMU,eco-friendly switchgear and gas-insulated switchgear. Its primary purpose is to connect a specific part of a circuit—such as a cable feeder or a busbar—directly to the earth. The earthing switch is different with the vacuum circuit breaker , or a load break switch, the earthing switch is not designed to interrupt load current or fault current under normal circumstances. Instead, it is a safety device that operates only after the circuit has been de-energized by the primary switching device. It provides a visible and positive indication that the downstream section of the network is grounded, ensuring it is safe for technicians to work on.

How does this product work?

The 11kV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch for RMU ensures safe maintenance and system protection by establishing a low-impedance grounding path. Its operation comprises three key stages:

1. Mechanical operation: Earthing switch is operated through an external mechanism, usually using manual handles or electric devices for remote operation. This mechanism drives a set of moving contacts towards a set of fixed contacts. The operation is usually of a "make-proof" type, meaning the switch has the mechanical strength to close against a fault current if an error occurs, though it cannot open under fault.

2. Establishing the Ground Path: When the moving contacts mate with the fixed contacts, they create a continuous metallic path. One end of this path is connected to the high-voltage conductor (e.g., the cable termination). The other end is solidly bolted to the RMU's earth bar, which is in turn connected to the station's earth grid. This effectively shorts the phase conductors to the earth.

3. Safety Interlocking: A fundamental aspect of its operation is strict mechanical interlocks (part of "five-prevention" logic). These interlocks prevent the earthing switch from being closed while the main switch (load break switch or circuit breaker) is in the closed position, and conversely, prevent the main switch from being closed while the earthing switch is engaged. This prevents catastrophic "dead-short" faults.

What are the functions of this product?

The 11kV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch for RMU provides important safety and operational functions:

1.Personnel Safety

Grounds downstream cables and busbars to ensure a zero-potential working environment.

Protects maintenance personnel from unexpected electrical conditions such as reverse supply, induced voltage, lightning strikes, or residual charge.

2.Residual Charge Dissipation

Medium-voltage cables store capacitive energy.

The switch provides a controlled discharge path after disconnection from the power supply, eliminating the risk of electric shock.

3.Status Indication and Verification

Provides clear visual indication on the RMU panel.

Combined with voltage presence indicators, technicians can verify circuit safety before operation.

4.Enabling Cable Testing

Safely facilitates electrical tests such as insulation resistance or VLF testing.

After testing, the switch safely discharges accumulated test voltage from cable capacitance.

Application Scope Of Earthing Switch

The application of the 11kV Medium Voltage Indoor Earthing Switch for RMU depends on standard configuration and operational requirements:

1.Feeder Compartments

Most common application.

Each outgoing feeder cable is equipped with an integrated earthing switch, allowing safe work on downstream networks such as distribution transformers or customer connections.

2.Busbar Earthing

Used to ground the main busbars in incoming feeder or vertical bus compartments.

Essential for safe maintenance of the internal RMU bus system.

3.Voltage Transformer Compartments

Installed on the high-voltage side of the RMU in VT areas.

Ensures safe isolation and maintenance of voltage transformer units.

4.Fault Testing

In automated distribution networks, some earthing switches can be intentionally closed to create a temporary short circuit, causing upstream breakers to trip and isolate faulted sections.

5.Voltage Levels

Widely applied in medium-voltage RMUs, including 12kV, 24kV, 36kV, and 40.5kV systems.

Though seemingly simple, the earthing switch is vital for personnel safety, transforming potentially live disconnected cables into safe working zones and serving as the last line of defense in high-voltage operations.

How should I proceed?

1. Grounding switch disconnection: Insert the operating handle into the grounding switch operating hole, and turn the reverse pin to disconnect.

2. Inside the load switch operation hole, turn clockwise (press the closing button for electric operation) to close the switch.

3. When using fan-shaped contacts, the grounding contacts of the lower grounding switch are assembled at positions 1, 4, and 6.

4. When using copper bars for overlapping, the grounding contacts of the lower grounding switch are assembled at positions 2, 3, and 5.
