The 11KV Medium Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear is a compact, metal-enclosed medium-voltage power distribution solution in which all live components, including circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars, are sealed inside a gas-tight stainless steel tank filled with insulating gas. This fully sealed design offers superior protection against environmental factors such as humidity, salt fog, dust, and small animals, ensuring that C-GIS performs reliably even under harsh conditions.

What is the principle of the gas-insulated switchgear?

The main working principle of the 11KV Medium Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear and ring main units is to physically isolate live parts from the external environment.

Working Principle:The live parts of gas-insulated switchgears or ring main units such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars are sealed inside a gas-tight stainless steel gas-box filled with pressurized insulating gas, which replaces traditional air as the insulating medium, making the equipment immune to environmental influences.

Insulation and Arc Extinguishing: The insulating gas in the gas-box(e.g., SF₆, N₂, dry air) provides excellent insulation. When the circuit opens, an arc is generated, and a vacuum interrupter efficiently quenches the arc to ensure safe disconnection.

Key Components: A typical C-GIS unit mainly consists of the gas tank, switching elements (vacuum circuit breaker, disconnector, etc.), operating mechanism, as well as a low-voltage control compartment and a cable compartment.

What are the advantages of gas-insulated switchgears or ring main units?

Compared with traditional air-insulated switchgear, 11KV Medium Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear has many significant advantages.

Firstly, The pressurized insulating gas has a dielectric strength two to three times that of air, Using this sort of gas such as SF₆, N₂, dry air can significantly improve insulation performance. At higher voltage levels, this advantage is more pronounced, which has the feature of more compact size and this will help us to develop smaller, space saving devices.

Secondly, in addition to excellent insulation performance, The pressurized gas can also enhance arc extinguishing ability, this will improve circuit breaking performance.

Thirdly, the fully sealed and airtight structure enables the switchgear itself to resist external harmful environmental factors such as condensation, pollution, small animals, and chemical pollutants. Therefore, it can operate reliably in harsh or demanding environments. In 2002, a major flood occurred in the Elbe River in Germany, but the flooded inflatable switchgear units quickly resumed operation, demonstrating the reliable and safe operation capability of gas insulated cabinets in harsh environments.

Compared to traditional AIS, C-GIS shows significant advantages in several dimensions, but also has some limitations
