Vacuum Circuit Breaker

A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is an electrical componnents of the switchgear or ring main unit in the power distribution system, which interrupts current flow using a vacuum as the arc-extinguishing medium. The vacuum circuit breakers unlike circuit breakers that rely on oil or gas (like SF₆), a VCB houses its fixed and movable contacts within a sealed vacuum interrupter.

When a fault occurs, the contacts separate and creating an electrical arc.Due to the surrounding environment is a vacuum, there are no gases to ionize and sustain the arc. The arc is quickly extinguished as the metal vapor from the contacts condenses, restoring dielectric strength almost instantly. This process is highly efficient, rapid, and environmentally friendly. VCBs are predominantly used in medium-voltage applications (3kV to 40.5kV), and the have the advatages of long life, low maintenance, and ability to handle frequent switching operations..


Switch Disconnector

A switch disconnector is a core component in the environmental friendly RMU, which provides two main functions. First, this switch can safely make, carry, and break the normal load current of a circuit. Second, in the open position, this isolation switch provides a specified degree of isolation, creating a visible and safe disconnection point for maintenance or troubleshooting.

While it can handle normal operational currents, a switch disconnector is not designed to interrupt high fault currents (like short circuits). It must be able to withstand these high currents for a short duration but relies on an upstream fuse or circuit breaker to actually clear the fault. They are essential for sectionalizing cables, switching transformers, and isolating ring network units, and can be either air-insulated or gas-insulated (SF₆or SF₆-free) for a compact footprint.

1. Why is a vacuum used to extinguish the arc in a VCB?

A vacuum is an incredibly effective arc-quenching medium because it has almost no particles to ionize. When the contact point of the vacuum circuit breaker separated, the arc will be formed by metal vapor. In a vacuum environment, this vapor will quickly re condense onto the contact surface, ionize the contact gap, and prevent the arc from reigniting. This process can be completed within milliseconds.


2. Can a switch disconnector be used as a standalone protection device?

No. A switch disconnector is a switching and isolating device, not a protection device. It cannot interrupt short-circuit currents. For complete protection, it must be used in series with a fault-current interrupting device, such as a set of fuses (forming a switch-fuse combination) or with a circuit breaker.
