Power Transformers: Core Components for Voltage Conversion and Energy Transfer

Power transformers are fundamental equipment in AC power systems for voltage conversion, energy transfer, and electrical isolation. Through electromagnetic induction, a transformer converts electrical energy from one voltage level to another at the same frequency, meeting requirements for generation step-up, long-distance transmission, regional distribution, and end-user utilization. Large power transformers can reach rated capacities of thousands of MVA, with voltage levels ranging from 110 kV up to 1000 kV and above for ultra-high voltage grids.

Based on cooling methods, transformers are mainly classified as oil-immersed self-cooled, forced oil circulation with air coolers, and forced oil circulation with water coolers. Insulating oil serves both heat dissipation and dielectric strength enhancement. To improve operational reliability, modern transformers are commonly equipped with online monitoring devices such as gas relays, oil thermometers, winding thermometers, and pressure relief valves. In addition, chromatographic analysis can periodically measure the composition and concentration of dissolved gases in the insulating oil, enabling early detection of partial discharge, overheating, or arcing faults.

Under the trend of energy conservation, amorphous alloy core transformers have gained significant attention because their no-load losses are about 70% lower than those of conventional silicon steel core units. For urban underground substations and compact package substations, miniaturization and low-noise design have become technical priorities. The development of smart transformers integrates electronic tap changers and condition sensing modules, allowing automatic voltage regulation based on load variations and uploading of key parameters such as vibration, temperature, and partial discharge. It is foreseeable that power transformers will continue to evolve toward high efficiency, low noise, intelligence, and environmental friendliness.
