Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Q: How is “live-pluggable” achieved in 24kV cable branch boxes?

A: This mainly applies to the 200A connectors in US-type branch boxes. These connectors have internal arc-extinguishing features or special construction, and with a dedicated operating tool, they can be plugged/unplugged under load, acting as a load break switch. Note: 630A main circuit connectors must never be live-plugged/unplugged; they must only be screwed in/out with the tool after de-energization.

 

2. Q: Why are some branch boxes expensive while others are cheap?

A: Price differences mainly come from internal materials (imported silicone rubber vs. domestic, full-copper conductors vs. others), enclosure material (stainless steel vs. ordinary painted steel), and inclusion of switching units. A branch box with an SF6 switch costs significantly more than a basic type.

 

3. Q: Are internal connectors prone to failure due to moisture ingress?

A: High-quality branch boxes use silicone rubber prefabricated connectors. Silicone rubber has excellent hydrophobicity and high elasticity. When properly installed (clean interface), the sealing with the cable is extremely effective, allowing short-term submersion in water. Moisture resistance is very strong with correct installation.

 

4. Q: What is the difference between a cable branch box and a switching station (ring main unit)?

A: The medium voltage cable branch box has not any internal switch, which cannot cut off short-circuit current and only serves as a physical connection point. The ring main unit (RMU) is equipped with switch devices (circuit breakers/load isolation switches) with protection, control, and metering functions. The switch type cable branch box is located between the two, and its function is similar to a compact outdoor ring network unit.

 

5. Q: Is a foundation required for installing a cable branch box?

A: Yes. Although the device itself can be ground-mounted, for proper cable bending radius, waterproofing, dust protection, and operational convenience, a concrete plinth (approx. 30–50cm high) is typically required. The box is fixed on the plinth, and cables enter from the bottom.
